How many Jews in US military?

Just wondering...

Does anyone know the ACTUAL numbers/percentages of Jews in the military?

Lots of people have opinions and guesses, and there are some stats from military academies, but I can't find totals!

* Religious identification on military applications is optional
* "If the rate of intermarriage is 50 percent in the general Jewish population, itís close to 100 percent among Jews in the armed forces"
* We estimate that there are approximately 5,000 Jewish U S servicemen and women serving at bases all around the world.

i am a spouse of someone in the military... and to my knowledge the percent of non frum people in the military is less than frum people in the military... there are many frum chaplains and such and other frum soldiers... in fact there are over three frum chaplains in theature (that army lingo for battle front)... and i have one thing else i want to share... but i will create a thread for it.... thanks

I know this to be true. When I meet a Jewish member of the armed forces who tells me s/he is married to a Jew, I am extremely surprised.

Re: How many Jews in US military?

My brother is in the army. There are no Jewish soldiers in the platoon, and VERY few at the base all together. His chaplain isn't Jewish either.

Since asking the question originally, several sources (including from within the military chaplaincy), have restated the 5,000 estimate and pointed out that many of that 5,000 are not very interested in yiddishkeit. In all of the US military, I was told that there are fewer than 25 rabbis in the chaplaincy. At least one 'rabbi' is a woman, and the Army, for example, has about ten total rabbis.

I myself am currently in the US Navy and I know there are very few religious jews, or even jews in general in my branch I heard the statistics was that we are 00.1% of the military. Someone brought up the stereo type of 100% assimilation and intermarriage, the actual statistics I've seen is 80-90%. There is only one orthadox rabbi in the navy and I've never met him. There is actually a Chabad rabbi in the US Army National Guard, a colnol even, he is even allowed to wear his beard, I've been given the impression that the army's chaplains are more often orthodox than Navy (I think we have a total of 7 rabbis and like I said 1 orthodox, and I know the rabbi in this area (Norfolk VA) is very against helping observant jews, he told me it is a desacration against G-d to want to observe mitzvas while in the service. The military is desperate for anyone who is considered a "rabbi" they are suppoed to have 16 in the navy and were only able to get 7, they do not send these rabbis to actually work as rabbis though, they are sent to be military chaplains which may even include going over to conduct things with other religions, mostly ******ian so basically they tend to hold the bottom of the barrel, I'm not sure if that is in all the services but Navy it definately is.
