In Otzar Hatefillos it says that according to the Ari one need not cover their eyes during the "small" Shema before Karbanos. Do we follow this Minhag? And what about the Krias Shemah that we say with Rabbeinu Tam?

maybe we cover our eyes because since we usually daven after zman tefillah and read all 3 parshiyos by k"s ketana, it has the same din as the regular krias shema

the only possible thing that i can think is;
the ARI writes that one should say pitum hakotores after davenning al pi kabalah (the TZ TZ in shoresh mitzvos hatfelah gives a reason for it).
Rabbi c. Vittal who's minhag was not say it everyday after davenning asked the ARI if he should change his minhag and say it?
the ARI replied "may'lah if we would be zohir in dibbur (meaning that every word we say through out the day is acounted for) then there may be a problem of saying something extra. however since we are not zo'hir there is no big deal to say extra words of davenning".
the same may apply.

Halacha L'Maase, I remember asking my Mashpia about this, he told me that yes, one should still cover their eyes.
