adding extra shabbos candle

what does one do if they have forgotten or weren't able to light Shabbos candles on time?
I've heard to add a new one every week for the rest of your life-
But it seems a little stringent for single girls, for whom lighting candles is a minhag, not a mitzvah?
any one with valid info?

I can't speak for Chabad minhog or for single women, but the general minhog is that for every time a married woman forgets she lights an extra candle. This is in both Shulchan Oruch and Shulchan Oruch HoRav 263:1.

i believe that this is only when it was negligent but not when its an o'ness

call a rav. I know some girls who couldn't/didn't light one week so they assumed they had to light an extra candle. After a few weeks they called a rav who told them they didn't have to light that candle but because they did already for three weeks and it's a chazaka they will have to keep it up. I know a woman who didn't light one week and when she asked the rav he said she doesn't have to add an extra candle.
