View Full Version : Boruch Hashem in Letters
Chabad-Yudele

it's known the letter of the rebbe to the rogatchover to find a source for this that we write in letters "boruch Hashem" - "b'ezras hashem". (Printed in Shaarei halacha uminhag chelk beis page 321). the rebbe finishes off "it's a wonder that i wasn't answered anything regarding this."
Does anyone know of any source or has anything to add?

i recall seeing a teshuvo of the Rogetchover that says one should not write BH on letters and the like (i dont recall the exact context and details)

The Rogatchover was Lubavitch?

the ohr sameiach and the rogatchover both lived in dvinsk. the former was rav of the oilemeshe (though he was not opposed to chassidim - he was at the rebbe's wedding (i think) and even sent his sefer to the rebbe). the latter was the rav of the lubavitcher community (though i am not sure if he himself grew lubavitch etc. i remember reading that the tzemach tzedek gave him a brocho that he should be a gaon (that was probably in the last years of the tz. tzedek bealmo dein (1860's).

He did not consider himself a Lubavitcher Chosid, but he was the Rov of the Lubavitcher Kehila.

He was not a "conventional" Lubavitcher Chassid, but his connection (pre-Petersburgh days) was to Kopust (Chabad). His Bittul to the Frierdikeh Rebbe was unbelievable.
I don't remember the details, but the FR once wanted to discuss something with him, and when he got the message he ran out the door saying "der Nassi ruft, der Nassi ruft."
Once he came into the big Peterburger Shul to Daven Shachris (btw, this was at about 11 am), and he was standing at the Mizrach. All the way in Maarav side of the Shul, stood a young Lubavitcher boy. Meanwhile, a "oilemsher" came in--this was evidenced by the fact that he went over to the Omud and started saying Berachos (as their Minhag is to say Berachos in Shul).
The Rogatchover looked around, saw the child, ran to him (from one side of the Shul to the next) saying "Kuk! A Misnaged! A Misnaged!"....
(Heard from the "child" in the story.)

No secrets...
Another anecdote (though this isn't really the topic):
A Chassid was at a train station in Petersburgh, and the Rogatchover came off a train, obviously very excited. When he saw the Chassid he came over to him and said "Ah! Hub ich zei areingezugt... Ah! Hub ich zei areingezugt..."
After a few minutes the Chassid was able to ask him what had taken place. He replied that in his cabin on the train there were two "Oilamshe." And "Ah! hub ich zei areingezugt"...
What did he tell them? "Ich hub zei gezugt az der Alter Rebbe hut gekent lernen a sach besser vi der Gaon. Ah! Hub ich zei areingezugt...
Heard from a grandson of the Chassid. Masbir, you know who this one was too?

I remember reading that the tzemach tzedek gave him a brocho that he should be a gaon
He told him to learn Nazir, which some say was why he never cut his hear.
I don't remember the details, but the FR once wanted to discuss something with him, and when he got the message he ran out the door saying "der Nassi ruft, der Nassi ruft." When the Fr became sick after having just taken over the Nesius, the Rogatchover said (sorry I forget the actual lumdes) something to the affect that when the FR took over there needed to be a bitul imbetween, but he was now paskening with his Koach haTorah that this bitul had been acheived and now the FR needed to get better. From that point on the FR called him Sar Hatorah, and he called the FR Nassi

Does anyone have an answer to the question that was originally posted?
someone told me that, we clearly see by the rebbe's igros that every heading has a b"h (eventhough the rogatchover paskens differently).
we see also by birkas hagomel when flying an airplane the rebbe argues on him.
if so is there any hasboro for this? (the rebbe himself asks for a makor for this)

In the sefer Ginzei Hakodesh (Feinhandler, Yerushalayim 5762) p. 82, the author quotes the abovementioned Tzafnas Paaneach (ch. 196-7, 303:3), and supports this assertion based on a Maharshah in Succah (53a, Chidushei Agados) that even one letter of Hashem's name contains Kdusha and therefore requires Genizah. Such was the custom of some great Poskim (Chazon Ish Y.D. ch. 12), while others refrained from writing it altogether (Gr"a, Tshuvos Vihanhagos 1, ch. 640. Reb Chayim Volozhiner, ibid. although there is a dispute with regard to whether he continued this custom in his later years). By contrast, the Har Tzvi writes (Y.D. ch. 234) that it is (merely) a Hiddur not to erase B"H.
However, the Imrey Emes of Gur (Piskey Tshuvah vol. 3 ch. 293) writes that he never saw anyone being stringent in this regard, and in fact he has many letters of great Poskim (such as Reb Meshulam Igra, the Chidushei Hari"m of Gur, as well as letters from the Tzafnas Paaneach himself) who wrote on every page B"H. Following this opinion see Responsa Avnei Yashfehah (vol. ch. 13) that the opinion of Rav Vozner Shlita is that it does not require Genizah.
The author further states that he heard this from Rabbi N. Karelitz and Rav Aurebach z"l. Rav Elyashiv's opinion is that one should be more careful being that there is a Machlokes about this issue.
Reb Moshe Feinstein z"l was of the opinion (Y.D. vol. 2, ch. 138) that it is preferable to write bs"d instead of B"H. See also Mishne Halachos (6, 183) who prefers this approach as well.
Ther are however those (see Chayei Moshe Y.D. p. 152) who explain that the Poskim who wrote B"H on their Michtavim were not concerned that they will desecrated, being that Chidushei Torah were written on many of those pages.
However, for us Chassidim, "Ein Lanu ela divrei ben Amram" and we follow the Hanhagah of our Rebbe who was accustomed to writing B"H on all letters, brochurs, newsletters, etc.
PS In light os the above, it would also seem appropriate for a Chabad site to have a B"H on their logo rather than Bs"d. This should not pose any Halachic problem for a number of reasons: a) the letters on a computer are not considered genuine letters (I believe this view is held by Rabbi Farkash of Yerushalayim who permits typing on a computer on Chol Hamoed, being that the letters are not genuine). b) there is no possibility of the "site" (itself) being desecrated. Thus even according to the more stringent opinion, it should be permissible. Unless, of course, in the less likely circumstance of one printing a page of the website.

One of the printings of Kuntres Uma'ayan has a daled instead of a hey after the word "mi'beis." Perhaps that indicates something?
Perhaps the Rebbe assumed that the letters with B"H would be put in sheimos? It seems dochek to me to say that, though, considering the Rebbe wrote the same to not-yet-frum people, who surely wouldn't have been makpid.

The Rebbe asked a lubavitcher rov why a shul flyer did not have a BH

I believe that Rov was Rabbi Zeilingold of St. Paul Minnesota. IIRC, I heard the story from him myself.

I heard it from him. He was called into the Rebbe's room and asked about it.

mendelp did the shule flyer have a bs'd?No but it always had a bh and this particular one did not. And that is what the Rebbe questioned. see http://www.sichosinenglish.org/books/to-know-and-to-care-2/16.htm at the bottom of the page for more details.
