The Chofetz Chaim says that although there are people who technically stay within the law, they use a heter in a way that violates the spirit of the law. Jews are supposed to lend each other money to do a chesed, not in order to make money. The C.C. says that the heter iska, when done properly, is perfectly acceptable but if the lender can make an interest-free loan, he should.

The C.C. blamed the poverty of his times on people's reluctance to make interest-free loans. Loans that could have been given as a chesed were make into business partnerships instead, and since chesed preserves wealth, the lack of chesed was the cause of poverty.

The C.C. blamed the poverty of his times on people's reluctance to make interest-free loans.Maybe the poverty of his times resulted from the fact that people could not afford to make interest-free loans and were not allowed halachically to make loans with interest that would profit both sides.

Loans that could have been given as a chesed were make into business partnerships instead, and since chesed preserves wealth, the lack of chesed was the cause of poverty.Sorry, could you explain this? That doesn't make any sense. If a Jew rents out an apartment to another Jew, that is business; if he allows him to live in the apartment for free, it's chessed. If Jewish landlords nowadays cannot afford not to rent out their apartments this will lead to poverty?

In general, I still don't understand the intrinsic problem that Judaism has with ribis. Why is charging someone for the service of providing money that one needs now intrinsically bad? Also, how intrinsically bad is it, if we are allowed to do it to goyim (and goyim are allowed to do it to each other)?

The link is broken. I'll try to look it up in spare time. What's the bottom line?
