View Full Version : Chuppas Outside 770
Can someone knowledgeable give a history of the custom for Lubavitchers in Crown Heights to marry in front of 770?
when did this custom begin?
who did it, in the early years? all Lubavitchers? some?
when did it become something that all Lubavitchers marrying in Crown Heights do?

When the Rebbe was Mesader Kidushin, the Chupah was held in front of 770, so that the Rebbe took the least time getting there.
Afterwards, people wanted their Chupah to be as close to the Rebbe as possible, and the Rebbe himself mentioned it once or twice.
and the Rebbe himself mentioned it once or twice.
got any sources for us (take your time ... but not too much time) for this?
and now? why do those who think the Rebbe is no longer at 770, make chuppas there? One would think they'd either make the chuppa at the Ohel (which is not convenient for the guests unless a wedding hall is built there, and the Rebbe said weddings etc. should take place in Crown Heights) or at the hall?

Didn't the Rebbe go to the chasuna halls to be MK? Did they make chasunas in CH before the '60's?
Bittul, can you recheck your facts?
Jude, I knew you had a point with these questions. Lekovid 30 days before GT?

I haven't heard of someone having a wedding in CH but not having hteir chuppah outside 770. I guess because when all is said and done it's the Rebbe's shul.

There is a book called "Mekadesh Yisroel" about these weddings in front of 770. And I am sure it gives a history about it!

At first, yes the Rebbe would go, later not. Once the Rebbe stopped period that was the only way to have your chupah near the Rebbe.

in 5714 the rebbe said he will stop going away from CH for chupahs and if the chosson kallah wanted the rebbe to be mesader kiddushin it had to be by 770. look in mekadesh yisrael for all the details.
to answer Jude, squestion. the chuppahs were near 770 because of the reason i just mentioned. once that was the custom thats the way it remained. not every thing a chossid does has to be in close proximity to the rebbe. no one ever made their Bris, upsherenish davka in 770. nor do they today. the chuppah is different because of that reason and also i think i once remember hearing that there is something from the the FR? or the rebbe? to make the wedding in TT. maybe the chuppah or the Kabolas ponim. azoy gedentk zich.

there are brissim, upsherin, bar mitzva, sheva brachos in 770.

but not even 10%. the point being that not every thing has to be in the 4 amos of the rebbe. it was never that way and still isnt. so to ask why chassidim dont make their chupahs by the ohel is not really a valid question.

In the book Mekadesh Yisrael it says that before the nesius the Rebbe used to go to the halls. By the time the Rebbe had accepted the nesius, things changed a little bit.
The wanted to stop being Mesader Kidushin bichlal, but one of the chasidim (I don't remember who) told the Rebbe that he will do his wedding in front of 770.
Then later on the Rebbe put a condition to his being Mesader Kidushin. The condition was that the couple had to promise that they would go on shlichus(this is different form the early years where it was shaitels).
Rabbi Shmuel Lew's chasuna was the last wedding the Rebbe was Mesader Kidushin at.
The couple just before the Lew's had their chuppa in front of 770 and then flew to Pittsburg where the Kallah was from. (I know that for a fact because that couple are my relatives.)
and those couples for whom the Rebbe was not mesader kiddushin - where did they have their chuppa?
when did it become unheard of for those in Crown Heights to have their chuppa anywhere but 770?

I believe that when the Rebbe demanded that chasunos be made in CH that the chupos were done in front of 770. beforehand the chupos were done at the hall, with some exceptions.

They also had their chupahs in front of 770. There are some that say that the Rebbe used to listen to all the brochos.
