I heard that the Rebbe did not want to publish it because the Rebbe looks sick in the picture

It was not a true picture - rather (probably) a painting based on another painting of the FR - see http://www.hydepark.co.il/hydepark/topic.asp?topic_id=1121569

read that thread

so you're saying that it's known that no accurate photo/portrait of the Rebbe Maharash exists, or that one may/does exist, just that this one is not the real one?

Well, recently there was pictures of the Rebbe Maharash's son-in-law that was printed in Kafar Chabad.

How can someone prove that something doesn't exist? As of now, I don't think anyone knows of a picture (or at least they are not admitting to it).

I have heard it rumored that the Rebbe [ the library] have a picture...

I think there is a picture of the Rebbe Maharash in the library... it's just not available to the public.

There's a story- I don't know how true it is, I've only heard it by word of mouth, butit basicall goes that when the Frierdiker Rebbe was moving some bochurim from Tomchei tmimim were helping him pack and one came across a picture of the Maharash and took it. The bochur was going to ask someone to copy it and then return it. While the picture was in the bochur's possesion he became very sick. when other bochurim approached the Friediker Rebbe for a bracha, he told them to tell the bochur to return what he had taken. The bochur did and got better.
The bochur himself couldn't draw but he described the picture to another bocher and they produced a picture.
The picture is done in pencil and it looks like a cross between the Rebbe Rashab, The Tzemach Tzedek and the Frierdiker Rebbe. Its actually a pretty believable picture, since it's known that the Frierdiker rebbe looked like the Maharash, the only thing that's a little off is that the face is slim and the Mahrash was sick and heavy, but the pic may be from when he was younger.
This may be the picture you're talking about (the pencil one), but as far as I know it's always been available to the public if u know who to ask, but I don't think it would be published in any official book, as it's done by a pretty amatuer artist.

Like I said, I don't know how true it. but I have seen a picture that allegedly resulted from this story- I also don't know how real that is.
I just thought zaraza might be interested in the story, since the rumor of a published picture of the Maharash sounds just about as "fantastical".

Is it any of the pictures brought in the link I brought in post # 3?

no, it's just a picture of a face and it doesn't look like any of the pictures posted by Torah613 (or Horav Dave).

zaraza- I don't know why you were interested in this topic but if you are looking for a pic for a specific reason I'm sure you could get a look at this one if u shop around a little and ask the right people- that's how I found it. I don't think they'll give it to you or let you copy it though, unless you have a really good reason (scanning it to post online wasn't one, btw).

a little bit off topic- I asked around and found out that there is an existing picture of the Maharash, it was a passport picture. The picture is currently in the Rebbe's library but it's not available to the public because the Maharash was very ill and the pic reflects this.
I repeat A shayner fantazye.

fantazyes aside, there definitely is a picture, and it is not bechovodik and is therefore not circulated.

I repeat A shayner fantazye.I happen to have seen a picture of the R' Maharash which a bochur found in an old guys house in Tel Aviv (or something like that!) of which the man said was a picture of the R' Maharash.

I had also heard from the shliach in Moscow that the 'head defense analyst' of Russia is his great nephew and he had the same facial details as in the picture that the bochur had!:)

I heard from (I think it was) Shmuel Lew that he saw the pic of the Rebbe Maharash in the Rebbe's library. He said the he looked bery similar to the Frierdiker Rebbe, but more heavyset. The reason why the Rebbe was not - and did not allow them to - mifarsem the pic was because it was taken when the Maharash was ill, and it's not "melech beyafyo."

I was told by one of the Librarians that there was a picture of the Rebbe Maharash printed in the Algemeiner Journal several years ago, and that there's no reason to think that it's not accurate.

It might be the one that's posted above...

The picture posted above looks an awful lot like the "interpretive" picture of the FR that's hanging in the Library.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, the Rebbe Maharash wore a white Yarmulke...

The Alter Rebbe through the Rebbe Maharash wore white begodim under their black ones...

It's a photograph. I believe that Rabbi Levin said that it wasn't published since the Rebbe said it was not Melech B'yofo, etc.

Especially since the Librarian probably saw the original himself...

Anyway, which Algimeiner issue was this ?

I believe this is the picture you are refering to.

This is obviously not a photograph, and the picture does not look like Rabbi Lew describes it, so it cannot be the photograph that Rabbi Lew supposedly saw.

I don't think that the picture posted above is accurate, mainly because the Rebbe Maharash was only 48 when he passed away, and that man looks at least 60.

And what about the pictures of the Rebbe taken in the nun gimmel when he was so ill that seeing those pictures make me sick?
