I have a question, so I'm throwing it out in the air, hoping to catch an answer...
I thought Israel's gov't was a Democratic one, or at least it claims to be. If so, then shouldn't something as big as giving away land (Gush Katif) be voted upon by the people of Israel?!
If any modern country chooses to give land away, don't they hold a vote to let the people decide? Like if the USA decided to give away San Diego, wouldn't we vote on it?
Shouldn't the people of Israel DEMAND democracy and DEMAND to vote for this? We MUST stand up to this useless giving away of our land, we must demand to be given our say in politics! We must DEMAND to have the right to vote! No?

a democracy isn't a popularist government - it merely lets people choose every few years who will make the choices for them.

besides - if there were a mish'al ha'am on the disengagement (where most people would have voted against it) then there would also be a vote on funding for the yeshivos (which most people would vote against also)

everything has it's consequences and there isn't any straight path - especially not in politics

But honestly, can't the people get up and demand a vote? I don't understand how the gov't can do this without the consent of the people?! Perhaps I've been to "Americanized" with our "freedoms" etc... but i'm amazed by it all! How can the ppl. not stand up and demand that their voices be heard.
This is more than money for Yeshivos, this is the future of Israel, this is the daily lives of 9000 Yidden, and this is in regard to the Survival of many of our brothers and sisters, we must declare that we have a say in this...It seems so something archaic!

Yeah but n'eNow770, the majority of the voters would vote against. Most of them are "secular" Jews who think that giving away land will result in peace. They are so naive as to miss the fact that it is just a redundant cycle of stupidity.

I don't know if you're right about that...when you drive through EY half of it is Orange, we should at least be given the chance to vote for it or not... The voices of the people should be heard!

If most people accepted the disengagement - would you accept that decision or say they are mistaken, wrong, and keep on protesting?

Well right now I'm not doing anything but I would probably be protesting, why?

The forced removal of Jews from the West Bank and Gaza is illegal in international law and breaches their inalienable right to not be arbitrarily removed from their homes.
