Hi
Has anyone else heard of the thing about not ripping up photos if they have people on them? Where does it come from?
Thanks
Good question. I've wondered at this myself-I've been told of the custom, but with no sources, backing, or reasoning.
Anyone?

How about when you write down a living persons name ( in Hebrew) and then if you need to erase the name... i heard you must write other letters on top of it, in order to erase it.
Is it possible that this action goes under the same category?

maybe it has something to do with like how ur not supposed to say bad things (tear u up like a fish...) cuz they come true...
shmoozer-never heard of that (but then again, that doesn't mean much...)

Zaque, how would ripping up a picture make something come true?
Also maybe it can be compared to blowing out a candle, where its like blowing out someones neshama. Perhaps ripping up a picture has some same sort of effect.

The Rebbe said numerous times that when someone wants to be Mekushar to the Rebbe he should look at a picture of the Rebbe and then he will "be" with the Rebbe (ofcoure he is always with the Rebbe). So we see that a picture of someone has a direct connection with the person, and perhaps this is the reason that we shouldn't tear up a picturre of the person.

And also the famous story of someone who threw a shoe at the Rebbe's pic. or video (heard many diff. versions....) b/c he was upset, and later when before the Rebbe the Rebbe said that the shoe still hurt...

I am pretty sure that I have seen Kisvei yad where the Rebbe crooses out a name, though when it said Cha"k Admu"r the Rebbe would circle it as a sign that it sould be taken out.

A Rav once told me not to cross out people's names, although without citing a source. Maybe, its because your name is your source of Chayus, which should not ch"v be crossed out.

If you've noticed the Rebbe never crossed out the FR's name, just circled it and drew a line to take it out. Don't know if that was the same for all names.

I happen to have seen many (photocopys) of the Rebbe's ksav-yad-kodesh, and can say from what I have seen.
The Rebbe would cross out other peoples names, (see for example Teshurah from the Belinov wedding 4 Tammuz 5758 p. 66).
However, the Rebbe would circle the Rebbeims names, (see [off the top of my head] Teshurah from Vaad Talmidei Hatmimim 11 Nissan 5762 the Rebbe circled the Rebbe Rashabs name, and i've seen it many more times like that.)
